The Daily Mail (and its editor Paul Dacre) are between them, no stranger to being presented with awards and accolades for the level of its journalistic content, and January 29th 2012 see's the far right chip-wrapper win another certificate to stick on the editors office wall.
The award comes from Oxford University neuroscientist Dorothy Bishop , who every year presents a prize for the WORST misrepresentation of a scientific article by a newspaper.
2011 Orwellian Prize for Journalistic Misrepresentation
This years winning article was called "Just One Cannabis Joint Can Cause Psychiatric Episodes Similar to Schizophrenia as well as Damaging Memory."
The article is scored by the number of factual errors in the piece, with this years winner outdoing every other article the Daily Mail ever published about cannabis. Or anyone else for that matter. Indeed its been commented the article was SO bad its a record breaker in terms of how many errors were published by the newspaper. Professor Dorothy Bishop said of the article on her blog, "it’s set a standard for inaccuracy that will be hard to beat."
Professor Bishop then goes on to hi-light the blatant misrepresentations using colour coded boxes, with a red box scoring three points, an orange box scoring two points and a blue box scoring one point.
One would have thought a quick note to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) would have been enough to have the offending article removed or at the very least corrected.
The irony of this is the man who receives this coveted award on behalf of the Daily Mail (editor Paul Dacre) is also chairman of the PCC Editors’ Code of Practice Committee.
Enough said?
