Transforming the Tube | Introduction | Transport for London

We're working on the biggest transformation in the Tube's history. We are rebuilding the entire network, from tracks to trains and signals to stations.

London has to keep moving while we work on the Tube and we can't do it all at the same time. So it's going to take a while to make it the world-class network it should be - about 10 years in fact. There will be disruption as we carry out improvements, but we're committed to reducing the impact on your journeys as much as we can.

We'll keep you fully informed about what's happening, but recommend you always check before you travel.

Line improvements

Track and signalling are the foundations on which your daily journey is built. Once we've renewed them:

  • You won't have to wait as long for a train because we'll be able to run more trains per hour
  • You'll enjoy a smoother, faster and more reliable journey

Tube trains take quite a pounding each day, and many of them are more than 40 years old, so we're going to provide new trains on some lines, and extra carriages or refits on others.

Choose a line for more information on what's being done to improve your journey.

Station improvements

As we get to work on each station, you'll see:

  • A brighter environment - we're giving many stations a facelift (150 so far), restoring and protecting the heritage of old stations while completely modernising others (such as King's Cross St. Pancras)
  • Better access from street to train as we gradually install lifts at key stations and introduce wider ticket gates
  • Enhanced security
  • Improved customer information
