Petition Letter

TO DISCUSS THE ISSUES STATED WITH THE ROMANY AND GYPSY TRAVELLERS

WELCOME ROMANY GYPSIES,IRISH PAVEE AND ROMA

I just signed the following petition addressed to: THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.

----------------
TO DISCUSS THE ISSUES STATED WITH THE ROMANY AND GYPSY TRAVELLERS

The Petition of the National Federation of Gypsy Liaison Groups declares that there should be discussion, held in conjunction with Romany Gypsy people of English, Scots or Welsh origin and Irish Travellers, to draft a more useful definition with regard to 'gypsy' status, for the purposes of planning law. The present definition puts Gypsy women in an unequal position as carers for their family, or left widowed or divorced. Recent case-law shows that this is arising as an issue. The present definition is not a fair or equal one under the
Equality Act 2010.

In light of the drafting of the new National Planning Policy Framework and the new Planning Policy Statement, this is an ideal time to look
at this issue, which is of great detriment to Gypsy women who care for
their children as opposed to pursuing careers of travelling for work
purposes.

The Petitioners request the House of Commons to urge the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, together with the Equalities Minister, to discuss this matter urgently with, among others, representatives of Romany Gypsies and Travellers.

The Petitioners remain:
Signed by Gypsy women, their representatives and supporters

Sincerely,

[Your name]

we are a distinct people with a culture that does not nor has ever been truthfully portrayed. Our status has been projected into the minds of the public through propaganda which could not be further from the truth. we are crafts people; handmade our wares, sold them and fed our selves, paid our way and kept all else private. Let us live in peace

As a solicitor who has spent over two decades on Gypsy & Traveller matters I think this wake up call is long overdue.

It's complicated, it's difficult, at times it gets ugly and painful, but together we work. When we remain true and united we are a people. when we don't we're just people.

Why is always put on women? I am not human if they are not gypsies nor free to travel....

Romani are an unique ethnic group descending from the Rajasthan & Southern Panjab region of NW India. They have for most their recorded life, suffered greatly at the hands of misrepresentation and it is about time people began to get the real picture as to who they / we really are. Just because someone's grandfather lived in an old wooden caravan and they did a bit of scrap metal, this doesn't make them automatically Romani Gypsy. The chances are they were just a family moved out the city to find a new life living day to day. Real Romani are a complete ethnic people with unique Indian DNA, language and customs. They have contributed to European history for over 700 years and first are recorded as vets and shoemakers but soon fell to a life subjected to racism, slavery and persecution at the hands of many ignorant governments. The word "Gypsy" is from the mistaken identity that Romani were Egyptian the same way the Hungarians of Hungary were mistaken as being Huns even though they were in fact the Magyar who were of no relation to the Huns. Bearing this in mind, people would not misuse the name "Hungarian" to represent a different people, the same way the name "Gypsy" should also be used correctly. People of Irish traveller or any other ethnic travelling people in the world other than Romani are therefore not "Gypsy".

We fully support this petition. We are not aware of anyone who thinks that the current definition is appropriate or useful and the sooner it is amended the better.

I fully support this petition as I believe that it will prevent the historical stereotyping.

It's time we had a voice publicly

I have been involved in Gypsy?Traveller CivilRights for 37 Years and No Government in that time has seriously tried to address Gypsy and Traveller Issues

I believe Gypsey women should have the same rights

It is totally discriminatory that planning law uses a definition based on occupation rather than ethnicity.
