We rescued Pearl from a humane society we found through petfinder.com back in 2002. She is the sweetest, friendliest goof ball you’ll ever meet. She also loves to watch television. Pearl has been an avid television watcher for several years now. She lies on my son’s bed with her head on the pillow or out in the living room and watches television; sometimes for an hour or so at a time. I know why she does this.

She waits for an animal, any animal, to come on the screen and she starts barking at it like nobody’s business. Forget about watching Animal Planet or Nat Geo when she is in the room, she blocks the screen barking and carrying on just hoping for a response from the television animals. At first I thought she was just responding to barking dogs and the sounds until one day I had the television on but with the sound turned down because I was reading. She saw an elephant with no sound at all. She went crazy trying to get to the screen and get a response from the elephant.

One afternoon, a friend came down from upstate to visit and we were sitting in the living room with the television on. We weren’t really watching it as we were talking and catching up with our lives. All three of the dogs were with us. She noticed Pearl’s intense watching of the television as she lay on the floor but didn’t really say anything at first. Finally she said, “What’s up with your dog.” I told my friend not to mind her, she’s just waiting for an animal so she can go bonkers on it.

I then switched the channel to find a show with animals that were not dogs, and I found Bonanza. As soon as she saw Little Joe on his horse, Pearl took off after the television. My friend almost lost it; she was laughing so hard. She has never seen a dog who watches television the way Pearl does.

More recently, my younger son and I were watching the wildlife Web cams on the computer. There was no sound at all, not even background noise. A bear came walking across the screen and Pearl caught sight of it. She jumped up and tried to go after it, nearly knocking my son right out of his chair. We couldn’t stop laughing at her and had to leave the site so she would stop. There must be some sort of support group out there for dogs who have an addiction to television! Anyone knows of one, please let me know.
