Malheur National Forest - Welcome!

The 1.7 million acre Malheur National Forest is located in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon. The diverse and beautiful scenery of the forest includes high desert grasslands, sage and juniper, pine, fir and other tree species, and the hidden gems of alpine lakes and meadows. Elevations vary from about 4000 feet (1200 meters) to the 9038 foot (2754 meters) top of Strawberry Mountain. The Strawberry Mountain range extends east to west through the center of the Forest.

Changing Motorized Access on the Malheur National Forest

More people than ever are visiting our National Forests and Grasslands. They enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities, including camping, hiking, skiing, driving for pleasure, horse back riding, mountain biking and riding off-highway vehicles. Throughout the nation, one of the fastest growing communities of users is those riding off-highway vehicles (OHVs).

In 2005, the Forest Service published the Travel Management Rule rule for providing motor vehicle access to the national forests and grasslands. The purpose is to adapt Forest Service travel management policies to:

• Provide consistency for motor vehicle use across the nation.
• Enhance and secure recreational opportunties for public enjoyment for both motorized and non-motorized users.
• Better protect natural and cultural resouces.
• Address use conflicts.

The Travel Management Rule states:
“Each (Forest Service) unit or district shall designate those roads, trails, and areas open to motor vehicle use by vehicle class and, if appropriate, by time of year” (36 CFR 212.51)

Egley Complex Fire Area Closures Still in Effect as of July 21, 2010.

Due to remaining hazards associated with the fires and for public safety, there are still some closures that remain in effect within the Egley and Silver fire areaa. Please review the documents linked below for detailed information. You may also contact the Emigrant Ranger District at (541) 573-4300 for information as well.

Blue Mountain Forest Plan Revision

The proposed action for the land and resource management plan for the Malheur, Umatilla, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests is now available for public comment. The current Forest Plans are near the end of their intended 15-year life, and will be revised to address the substantial resource and social changes on the three Forests as well as new scientific information.

Weed Free Feed Required on National Forest Lands:
