National Action for Access to Opioid Medicines - Success Stories

During the 53rd session a side event sponsored by VNGOC, together with WHO, the Federal Office of Public Health of Switzerland, the International Union Against Cancer (IUCC), the Open Society Institute (OSI), the Drug Control and Access to Medicines Consortium (DCAM) and Human Rights Watch was held.  Financial support was provided by DCAM and OSI.

The meeting had introductory remarks from Professor Sevil Atasoy, President of the International Narcotics Control Board, Alison Crocket, Senior Adviser at the Department for International Development (UK), Colin McIff, Multilateral Organisations Officer, President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (USA) and Dr Willem Scholten, Team Leader, WHO Access to Controlled Medications Programme.  These remarks were followed by presentations from:

Dr Henry Ddungu, Advocacy Manager, African Palliative Care Association and Physician, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda who spoke on "Improving Morphine Availability in Resources Limited Settings: Uganda's experience with nurse prescribing"

Dr M R Rajagopal, Chairman, Pallium, India, who spoke on "India's Experience with Reform of Excessively Cumbersome Narcotic Regulations"

Dr Rosa Buitragp de Tello, Clinical Pharmacist, Titular Professor, School of Pharmacy, University of Panama, who spoke on "Finding the Way to Reach a Balance between Access to Opioids and Regulations Directed to Avoid Misuse: Panama's Experience"

Alisher Latypov, Research Student, The Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London and Corresponding Member, Reference Group to the United Nations on HIV and Injecting Drug Use who spoke on "Introducing Medically Assisted Treatment for Drug Users: the Central Asian Experience."
