The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party's candidate in the Botany by-election, Leo Biggs, is calling on Judge Neave to show compassion in the case of a Timaru cancer patient to be sent to jail for using medical cannabis.
Peter Davy appeared before the court last Tuesday on charges surrounding the cultivation of medical cannabis where Judge Neave told him to "prepare for jail" at sentencing.
However, if sent to jail, Mr Davy has vowed to go on hunger strike and abstain from his cancer medicines until he dies as a protest against the persecution of New Zealand’s medical cannabis users.
Jailing Mr Davy will also mean a death sentence for his partner, who suffers from advanced multiple sclerosis.
Judge Neave only reluctantly bailed Mr Davy until sentencing so that he could arrange to sell all their belongings and pay for her to die slowly in a rest home.
In light of the continued suffering of Mr. Davy and so many others, ALCP’s Leo Biggs is calling on the Government and Police to enact an immediate moratorium on arrests of medical cannabis users.
It is high time that New Zealand’s unjust, hypocritical, and in this case deadly cannabis prohibition laws are reformed.
