The Patients Association responds to GMC consultation on Fitness to Practice

The Patients Association have responded to the General Medical Council's Fitness to Practice Consultation.

The role of the General Medical Council (GMC) is to ensure that doctors upheld standards and that patients are treated safely. In cases where doctors have failed in their duty, the GMC may hold a Fitness to Practice panel whereby the actions of the doctor are examined in a manner similar to a court. These hearings are open to the public and patients involved in the case may be asked to give evidence. The proposal outlined in the GMCs consultation is to replace the Fitness to Practice panel with a consensual approach to decision-making whereby the doctor and the GMC discuss the case behind closed doors. The outcome would be recorded but the discussion would not be open to the public and we are concerned about the lack of transparency in the process. Patient witnesses and lay person involvement in this process is essential.

The Patients Association is a national healthcare charity and is nearly 50 years old. We exist to help any patient in the United Kingdom with:

  • Signposting to advice and information:
Email helpline@patients-association.com  Or call our Helpline on 0845 608 4455 10.00am-4.00pm Monday to Friday
  • Information on how to get the best out of your healthcare
  • PA Guides to various problems or concerns patients may have (on the left-hand menu)
  • Opportunities to tell us about their healthcare experiences good or bad
  • Improving health services by taking part in our Taking the Pulse regular surveys on different aspects of healthcare.

By listening to patients, we are able to campaign to improve services. We will work with all healthcare providers to improve services. Very often patients think they are alone with the problem or complaint they have. When patients talk to us we are able to track problems arising in more than one place and realize there is a nationwide issue that needs change.

We are funded by individual members, so please join us, and by corporate members, specific project work, consultations and events. We are entirely independent and do not receive any core funding from the Department of Health or any other government body
