Trader gets gallows for drug offence


JOHOR BARU: A pasar malam trader was sent to the gallows by the High Court here after he was found guilty of trafficking 0.77kg of cannabis.

Fadil Bachok, 46, was accused of committing the offence on Sept 9, 2009, at around 2.40am at his house in Kampung Parit Pasir, Pekan Nenas, in Pontian.

He was charged under 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and was sentenced under Section 39B(2) of the same Act.

To death row: Fadil being brought to the Johor Baru High Court Friday. Fadil was found guilty of trafficking 0.77kg of cannabis and was sentenced to death by the High Court.

In passing sentence, High Court judge Samsudin Hassan said the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against the accused.

“The amount of drugs is a lot and the court believes that the accused had the intention of selling it and it was not for personal use,” he said.

“The prosecution also proved beyond reasonable doubt that the cannabis belonged to the accused.”

In a magistrate’s court, a businessman pleaded not guilty to stealing a Singapore-registered vehicle.

Wang Sin Tak, 53, is alleged to have stolen the Toyota Vios on Jan 28 at a parking lot of an apartment in Bandar Permas here at around 8.30pm.

He is charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code for stealing the vehicle.

According to the facts of the case, police arrested Wang on Feb 11 at 1.30pm at the Skudai toll plaza.

Wang is also charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code for possessing the stolen vehicle.

Magistrate Hafizah Johor Ariff Johor set bail at RM29,000 and April 24 for the trial.

DPP Dzul Iswari Mohd Jaafar prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
