About 38 Degrees
38 Degrees is an organisation which brings you together with other people to take action on the issues that matter to you and bring about real change in the UK.
WHAT WE BELIEVE IN
We believe that it's people who should have the power in our society. We help make this happen by making it easy for people to influence the institutions, like the government, who make decisions that affect us all.
We work together in our thousands to defend fairness, protect rights, promote peace, preserve the planet and deepen democracy. Some people might call those goals ‘liberal’, 'left-of-centre' or ‘progressive’. We call them common sense for a better world.
We are not connected with any political parties. We are driven by issues and outcomes, and judge all politicians by the same standards.
HISTORY
38 Degrees launched in May 2009 with a campaign for a Recall Law. Since then we’ve had some brilliant achievements: our actions have helped save BBC 6Music and helped stop Trident being renewed for at least 5 more years. We’ve collaborated with great people like the End Child Poverty Coalition, Crisis and Tripping up Trump. We’ve also grown: there are now over 320,000 38 Degrees members working together for change.
Here are a few of the things we’ve been campaigning for:
- New rules for lobbyists.
- Opposition to media monopoly.
- A fairer voting system.
- Fighting against factory farming.
- Standing up for the BBC.
- A cleaner energy bill.
- An end to tax dodging
- Protection against homelessness
- Against government plans to sell off our forests
HOW WE WORK
38 Degrees is inspired by the impact of groups like MoveOn.org in the United States, GetUp.org.au in Australia and Avaaz.org around the world. These groups have used the same model, technologies and techniques to mobilize nearly 9 million people. We aim to bring this approach to the UK.
Our aim is to use the latest technologies to make it quick and easy for people to take effective action. Sometimes this action is online, like signing a petition or sending an email to your MP or the editor of a local paper. Sometimes it's offline like calling your MP or joining a protest.
It’s free to sign up and to start receiving campaign emails and if you like what we are doing, you can get involved. Change happens when enough people come together. Join 38 Degrees and be part of the avalanche for change.
