2morrowknight: 16 People on Twitter Who Inspire the World

This is the latest post in our series, TwitterPowerhouses, which focuses on the contributions of people who've helped to expand, influence, and redefine how we view social networking.

What inspires you? The answer to that question can be found in the timeless words of a visionary leader or literary giant, the stunning beauty of historical landmarks and modern marvels, or the fighting spirit and the responsibility to support causes that speak to the very best of what humanity has to offer. Or, all of the above.

Truly, inspiration is a brand than can never be oversold. This is why I am excited about profiling the 16 people below. They are among the most respected, motivational voices on Twitter today. They inspire hundreds of thousands with their daily dose of gratitude, use of icons, thought-provoking blogs, support for nonprofits, and a great mix of uplifting quotes and affirmations.

In one of his great pieces on inspiration, Russell Simmons writes,

We are thinking about the question "What inspires you?" and we are inspired by compassionate love. With great love all things are possible. This is true. In Mahatma Gandhi's words, "love is the strongest force the world possesses, and yet it is the humblest imaginable." Mother Teresa spent her life working to give a voice to the poor and to promoting love as an essential ingredient to life. Her life devoted to the poor was among the richest in human history. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years imprisoned because of his actions to end the loveless and dehumanizing oppression of Apartheid.

Indeed, our lives are wonderfully defined, and refined, by the gravitational pull of positive people. We're drawn to what they promote, how they express themselves, and most of all, how their words line up with their actions. This is what Simmons is talking about. And just as we are inspired by the figures he mentioned, legions are also inspired by the 16 TwitterPowerhouses below. Men and women who are as richly diverse and captivating as the world we all inhabit.

This is a nice article. I already follow the majority of them, and just followed the rest who I was not aware of. My two favorites on the list are Ariaa Jaeger and Lori Moreno. Ariaa really does have the voice of an angel, as someone else here said. Her music is so beautiful, as are her tweets. She is very inspiring and seems like such a beautiful hearted person.

I sure don't see my name on this list!!
What gives?

Sorry - but the appearance of @lollydaskal on the list is akin to putting Palin on the ballot for ..well...anything. The rest of the list, as worthy as they may be, are brought lower by association. It is almost impossible to count her shamelessly plagerized blogs and uncredited quotes pushed out on twitter. The "testamonial" on her site (none of which are verifiable with a last name) read like they were written by the same person. While she is "prolific" - she certainly hasn't said much of value that she didn't steal from another (often uncredited) author. "Changing the world?" Pulease!

"...the appearance of @lollydaskal on the list is akin to putting Palin on the ballot for ..well...anything."

Wow...you're such a positive individual. You come on to the site, create an account just to kncok someone? Wow. I don't know @lollydaskal the way you're claiming. I do know her as someone who maintains a twitter feed characterized by both gratitude and inspiration. And that has won her fans on Twitter from around the world.

She belongs on the list. And she will stay on the list. As for you...stay classy, and try to get a "positivity transplant" because negativity is wack.

I have had the privlege of working with Ariaa as a student for many years, and was impressed that each class was not only tailored for my needs, but that she is so compassionate and such a great teacher. Also, the way that she lives her life is inspiring. She is a doer. Thanks Ariaa for caring so much about people, animals, and the planet.

Wow, what a cool article! I think this is a great informational piece and I'm also fortunate to be connected with good number of the Tweeters on this list too!.

While I don't want to steal anyone's thunder a-la "Kanye West" style LOL!, I do think that a couple of other referrals may be of interest to some here: the Dalai Lama is on Twitter, believe it or not, and you can read his heart and thoughts right on Twitter, his actual twitter acct is: twitter.com/dalailama. Also of heroic interest to me is the famous Cubana Blogger and freedom advocate in Cuba who also won the Cabot Award for her gripping microblogs about the injustices in CUba can be found at: twitter.com/yoanisanchez another great source of inspiration & courage.

Anyhow, phenomenal post 2morrow, you're I'm adding you to my favorites, thanks for sharing, and I hope you connect with me on Twitter.

Best,

It's an to be listed among these "Twitter Powerhouses" when I first began using Twitter I had no idea of the scope and reach it has. I am grateful to share my inspiration daily.

mmangen   10:07 PM on 4/19/2010

Absolutely love this list you've put together - I am blessed to be connected to over 1/2 of your list. I serendipitously met @JosephRanseth at a conference we were both attending last year in Denver. Had it not been for Twitter (and avatars) we would have never made the connection when we were chatting at the event.

@LollyDaskal is also an amazing woman and her recent Time Management Seminar taught me tips and tricks that I could immediately implement into my own business. (I believe she has more exciting things coming up so I'd stay tuned!)

Others on your list I regularly look at their streams and RT what they share because they can certainly be counted on to provide tweets worthy of RT'ing.

As for the names I didn't recognize on your list....I am def going to be checking them out.

I am so honoured and grateful to be included in this list given how much I respect and admire each and everyone of the other mentions. I enjoy Twitter immensely and make wonderful friends and connections every day - that is a blessing in itself. Sending my warmest wishes to all! And you, Sir 2K, you rock!

I'm lucky enough to have found most of these on my own and I think you've made some overall excellent choices.

I'm particularly happy to see that Ariaa Jaeger is on the list. I've known her for a year now and and she has become a great friend -- on Twitter, on the phone, and in person. We've spent a good deal of time together. She is a very dear soul who sincerely wants to do good for others. She's vibrant, loyal, energetic, positive, quick-witted, and a down-to-earth hoot & a hollar. She doesn't pretend to be perfect. I consider myself lucky to have her for my friend.
